The Muppets return to television in an The Office-type mockumentary of the behind the scenes business that goes on backstage at Miss Piggy’s talk show.  Piggy and Kermit are no longer a couple, Fozzie is dating, and the Muppets are being reintroduced and updated in a fresh and entertaining way.

0The Muppets have been around forever and, though I love them, they’ve shown their age and failed to rise to the new age several times.  Yeah, The Muppets movie got it right in so many amazing ways, but their second outing was a misfire and the last TV show was decades ago.

Now, they’ve been allowed to grow up and mature with the audience.  They’re a little more risque now and the jokes are a little naughtier, but it works…   It works and this is the first time in a long time (The Muppets movie included) that something Muppets related felt fresh and not simply nostalgic.

The show is funny too.  Perhaps it’s just the light shock of seeing Kermit and Piggy crack some more adult jokes, but I did laugh out loud several times and the gags are awfully witty.

Better yet, this new show allows for some genuinely emotional moments to shine through that pushes it beyond a simple puppet show for adults.  Kermit and Piggy share a scene outside a movie theater that feels almost sadly real in its jokelessness.

I loved this first episode and I’ll be tuning in for more.  Call it immaturity, call it nostalgia, call it what you will… but this is the type of uncynical happiness that I just need in my life right now.
