Star Trek: “The Return of the Archons”

It’s been a very long time since I saw this episode and, therefore, feel a little bad discussing it as the memories of it have somewhat faded over the years. What I do remember is that the idea of a society that allows its citizens to go berserk every now and then to let off steam is an intriguing one. God knows, I could do with a little raping and pillaging every now and then.

Another thing I remember is that the episode has some incredibly creepy moments in it that contrast nicely with the crew in western attire.

–and that’s about it. I remember not liking much else which pretty much lead to me never seeking out this episode again. A lot of the episode doesn’t work in my mind and he potential for development is wasted. Fortunately, the other episodes that feature a computer overmind are better executed.

Interesting Fact: This marks the first of four times in the classic series where Kirk talks a computer to death. The others are “The Changeling,” “I, Mudd,” and “The Ultimate Computer.”

“You said you wanted freedom; it’s time you learned that freedom is never a gift ? it has to be earned.”
– Kirk
