Star Trek: The Animated Series: “The Lorelei Signal”

Air Date: 09.29.1973
Stardate: 5483.7

This is another episode that’s pretty decent despite itself even though there are so many plot holes that it looks like Edward James Omos’ face. The fun of this half hour more than makes up for it.

First, the fun… this episode makes Uhura the hero which is fantastic. The story of a civilization of women who do something terrible to men and can only be stopped by female characters may be cliche, but it gives frequently overlooked characters a chance to shine and watching Kirk, Spock, and McCoy get beat up by Amazons is great.

The episode ends with a note of optimism and hope which is so thoroughly Star Trek that you can’t hate this adventure.

Interesting Fact: This is the only time in the entire television or theatrical run of Star Trek that Uhura commands the Enterprise. This episode also is the closest that Kirk comes to saying the famous phrase, “Beam me up, Scotty” when he says “Beam us up Scotty.” In reality, “Beam me up, Scotty” is never uttered once in classic Trek.

A life of hope. New learning. Perhaps even love. Oh, it is a much better future than immortality.
