Star Trek: The Animated Series: “Albatross”

Air Date: 09.28.1974

Wow, okay. This was an episode that I had never seen before and I have to admit, it’s really good. Even Shatner who had been pure vocal shit throughout the entire series seems to take on an enthusiasm that I hadn’t heard in a while. Perhaps if the Shat smells quality, he’s all over it like a chili dog smothered in cheese. This is one of the only times that the playful devil-may-care Kirk returned from the original series.

There is an air of maturity and sophistication about this story. It’s well-written, well-acted, and – unlike most of the other episodes – it moves fluidly and logically.

I even liked the aliens in this episode as they were all shades of gray and not stereotypical bad guys.

What a pleasant surprise!

Interesting Fact: The animated series won an Emmy for the program as a whole. While this episode didn’t specifically win an Emmy, it was the one presented to the Emmy committee as representative of the series.

“You will remind me to report my conduct to the Federation, won’t you Mr. Spock?”
– Kirk
