Star Trek: “Obsession”

Powerfully executed, “Obsession” is probably the punchiest and most well-written use of characters in the series as the big three come to conflict over Kirk’s single-minded obsession with killing the creature and his guilt of hesitating in the past.

The performances are on target and the climax is very exciting. Most people usually gush about “The City on the Edge of Forever” or “The Doomsday Machine,” while all but forgetting about this one… but “Obsession” is probably the most sophisticated and mature story that classic Trek ever told.

Interesting Fact: This episode contains greatest redshirt casualties of any classic Trek episode: four dead and three wounded.

“Monsters come in many forms. And do you know the greatest monster of them all? Guilt.”
– McCoy
