House in the Middle of the Highway

For a few weeks in 2012, Luo Baogen and his wife had the most unusual address in all of China.   When the Baogen’s neighborhood was demolished to make way for a new highway, they felt that the government’s compensation was too low and decided to hold out.  The Chinese Government, however, responded by paving the highway around the Baogen’s home, forcing cars to drive around it.

While it was clear that intimidation was being played, the Baogens resisted… even going so far as to sleep in separate parts of the house to stop any sneaky partial demolitions. Eventually, however, the government and the Baogens reached an agreement on the compensation and the home was finally destroyed.
