THE FLOATING ISLANDS OF LAKE TITICACA

Other than the fact that I love saying "Lake Titicaca," the lake named after poop and boobs is famous for a variety of reasons.  One of the lesser known but most interesting are the indigenous Uro's floating islands that they have made and remade from totora, a catail like reed, and provide a home and sustenance for over 2000 people on about 40 islands.

The islands have to be continually rebuilt as they do begin to come apart and sink in some places.  Some island dwellers occasionally step on a thin spot and put an unsuspecting leg into the frigid water.  Visitors have likened walking on the islands to walking on a waterbed.
