On January 16, 1998 American journalist Brian Bethel posted an online message about his encounter with two strange children with solid black eyes. He wrote; “It was then that I noticed their eyes. They were coal black. No pupil. No iris.” The incident occurred on a warm night in 1996. Bethel was sitting in his car writing a check when he heard a knocking on his driver’s side window.
“Two young boys, between the ages of 9 to 12 dressed in hooded pullovers stood outside. I cracked the window a bit, anticipating a spiel for money, but I was gripped by an incomprehensible, soul racking fear. I had no idea why.”
One of the boys asked Bethel for a ride claiming they wanted to see a movie but had left their house without any money. While Bethel mulled over if he should give them the ride or not, the boys tried to convince him that he should let them in his car.
The journalist thought ,“It wouldn’t take long. They are just two little kids. They don’t have a gun or anything.” He glanced away still unsure of what he should. When he looked back, Bethel said, “My mind exploded in a vortex of all-consuming terror. Both boys stared at me with coal black eyes. Soulless orbs like two great swatches of starless night.”
Bethel quickly rolled up his window as one of the boys banged on the glass and yelled, “We can’t come in unless you tell us it’s okay. LET US IN!!” The frightened journalist drove away. It appears that Bethel isn’t the only person reporting encounters with black eyed children. The internet is full of stories that all bear a striking resemblance.
One internet blogger named Sarah described her strange brush with two black eyed children. She was home alone one evening when she heard a light knocking at the front door. Peeking outside through the door glass she saw two young children standing on her front step, a girl about 11 years old and a boy about 9. Sarah opened the door.
The girl politely said, “ Ma’am, can we please come inside to use your phone to call our mom?” The simple request left her with a strong sense of danger and dread. The little girl then moved closer to the door. Sarah recounts, ”As the girl stepped into the light coming from inside the house I was able to get my first real look at her. Solid jet black eyes, that’s all I could see. The motherly instinct I first felt was gone and replaced by terror. I don’t think I’ve ever been as frightened in my life.”
“I could feel every hair on my arms and the back of my neck standing at attention. I closed the door to the point where just my face was able to stick out.”
The little girl stopped and again began to plead, “Please, Ma’am, we’re really scared and alone. We HAVE to come inside. Please help us!” Then as if on cue, both children began to whimper and cry. Sarah quickly slammed and locked the door. When she looked out again a second later the children were gone.
In another incident a young woman also claimed to have been visited by black eyed children standing at her front doorstep. The woman said the little girl had a voice that was mature, confident and articulate. The woman couldn’t see the girl’s eyes because the girl had her head bent forward. The young woman said she “stood frozen in fear” when the girl said, “We have to use your phone.”
“Slowly and silently, I backed away from the door, my dog Lucy cowering at my ankles.” The little girl became demanding, almost hostile, “We are not gong to hurt you. If we wanted to do that we would have broken in. I’ll ask again. May we come in and use your phone?”
“The dog snarled and although I moved away from the door something inside me seemed to be slowly pulling me back to the door to let them in. I didn’t, of course, and shortly I discovered they were gone. I wasn’t able to go to sleep that night, and I haven’t slept right since.”
The internet is full of stories of people claiming to have seen aliens, monsters and ghosts. Perhaps some of these stories are true but are disregarded due to all the hoaxes proliferating online these days. Could The Black Eyed Children stories be nothing more than an urban myth in the making or could they be real encounters with something more sinister? You can decide that for yourself if you should awaken late one night to a soft persistent knocking at your front door.
