Star Trek: The Animated Series: “The Jihad”

Air Date: 12.01.1973
Stardate: 5499.9

This is a very un-Trek episode of Star Trek as Kirk and Spock share the stage with several alien experts at the beck and call of a mysterious and powerful alien race – almost like Kirk and Spock were guest stars on another television series. Mind you, I don’t mean that as an insult – later on when the modern spin-offs came along it was the un-Trek episodes that turned out the best.

This one also turns out pretty good. It’s no classic like “Yesteryear” or “The Slaver Weapon,” but it’s a pleasant surprise. The momentum of the plot is haphazard and there is a lot of clunky dialogue and that drags it down, but it’s not bad at all. Very different.

Interesting Fact: This episode was written by Stephen Kandel, a story editor and writer for Mission: Impossible. This episode has the same theme of a secretive organization recruiting a team of specialists to go on an “impossible mission.”
